Seeing strange characters instead of the drawing characters is
normal - the book builds ncurses instead of ncursesw. On my own
builds, I build ncursesw (mainly because I want UTF-8 support), and
make menuconfig is just "tickety boo".

But, I would never bother with ncursesw before the final system. I
don't recall having any problems with selecting the desired options
in menuconfig when I only had ncurses. Try working around it by
doing what you think is necessary, saving the config, reviewing it,
checking what still needs to be fixed, and repeating.

Alternatively, do it the old way - 'make config' (this will ask
about everything, but help is mostly available on the '?' key.
