Thanks for you insight into the issue.  I have corrected the issue using a
later version of a patch for net-tools that was not correctly identified in
the BLFS guide.  A gentleman from the Netherlands (?), Bauke Jan Douma <
[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, assisted me with identifying the problem.  The error had
nothing to do with CLFS, but instead lies within the BLFS section pertaining
to net-tools.

The BLFS book indicates that the net-tools-1.60-kernel_headers-2.patch file
should be used, when in fact it should be version 3 of such file (which
Bauke obtained from the x86-64 guide).

Anyhow, all is well now (except that I cannot get DHCP networking to
function... but that is another issue).
