Responding to myself. Blah ;P Well, I found the solution. The troublemaker was me using framebuffer console & kbd mode being unicode by default. What I did was just copy the "console" bootscript from my LFS install (0.03 vs. 0.00 in CLFS) which has nice logic for the framebuffer, and suddenly everything works. All keys show correctly, kbd mode is ascii as it should be. Also, I found a bug in the book: udev-118 uses the "uucp" group instead of dialout, which is still set in CLFS. This causes 3 error lines at boot.
