Ok, hence I should do several things over again and add it to the configure 
arguments.
I'll leave the cross tools as they are, however, everything in /tools I'll do 
over again with -mtune added.
It's something that could be added to the clfs book for 64 bit online I presume.

Since you know that you are compiling for core2 you should use 
-march=core2.
