I was able to build grub2 for X86_64 pure 64 chroot build and still
working good. Build is 4 to 5 month old.

Wow, I'm still surprised that people keep answering any question but
the OP's! Yes, extlinux works fine in x86_64, I would usually use that
on USB drives though as I find other bootloaders more versatile.
