I'm building for ARM here...we'll see how it goes. My philosophy is to try to stick as close to "stock" as possible and only add stuff as needed.

I was using Ubuntu 10.04 i386 before, but the new box is a quad i7 with 8GB RAM [yay!] and I don't like Ubuntu's new window manager so thought I'd try Mint. I need the x86_64 to support the RAM. That much RAM is weird to me; I'm still running boxes that have less hard disk than that. :)

Last December I built a core i7 2700k system with an Asus P8Z68-V PRO GEN3 board and 16GB ram. I've had fun building CLFS and LFS builds fast as hell with it in ramdisk. Boot with ramdisk_size=8388608 and have myself an 8GB ramdisk to build in! Also, I clocked the sucker with my mediocre Zalman 9700 up to 4.6GHz. One wicked machine.

I still have a cobalt raq2 with 256MB ram and 30GB drive I think. Was my server till it was too slow for the job. Would make a nice over tasked router!

I see linux mint also has a release with the MATE desktop, have you tried that? I'm checking out the 32 and 64 bit with xfce.

Sincerely,

William Harrington
