Instead of separate `.get(Key)`+`.remove(Key)` calls we can call `.remove(Key, Value)`. `peerMap` is an `IdentityHashMap`. IdentityHashMap.remove compares values with == since Java 20 ([JDK-8178355](https://bugs.openjdk.org/browse/JDK-8178355))
