As Patrick pointed out, if you're working directly with byte array's you might want to use mmap which is what Iota does internally. It'll mean handling record delimiters yourself, but depending on the data you may be able to add some optimizations. I tossed together https://github.com/thebusby/clj-mmap for the Clojure Cookbook a while back if that helps.
