I've used the checkouts method, and found it to be a useful solution when I was actively modifying the library. When I'm not modifying the library very often, I've had fewer glitches by simply using 'lein install' from the library project directory. That installs the latest version of the library into my private set of libraries, and then the project that's using the library will find the new version. (Note that doing this will write a new pom.xml into your library project directory.)
