So, I've tried it and here are the findings.

If I open DVD drive and remove CD as soon as everything was copied to RAM 
and Clonezilla started doing its job, everything is fine.

Then I tried this. I waited until Clonezilla completed and brought up its 
final menu - Restart, Reboot, Shutdown, etc. I selected Reboot and right 
after that attempted to open the drive. At this point I found the drive 
dead locked as I described in my first post.

I do not remember how it happened at the first time, but I guess we can 
quite safely assume, I made the same mistake. 

I would agree that it was quite silly of me not to remove the CD before 
that point. However it happened to me to do the same mistake with 
previous versions and I never get the drive locked.
