trying to install Mandrake 9 as single OS

Errors I rec'd are:

xFree86-4.2.1-emdk.i586

clicked thru to:

"Where to install bootloader?"

Tried First Sector of Drive MBR and got error mkinitrd failed.

Any suggestions?
