Hey Jon,

re 3. : Make sure you're not running any services you don't need. The latest
available issue of Linux Format (Oct 2003) has some performance tweaks worth
looking at.

re 4. : I seem to remember evolution can import from Outlook Express, have a
poke around. There may also be third party tools as well (like outport - I
used it to export my Outlook 2000 stuff and never turned back).

re 6. : 3D games, I can't speak for counterstrike but I've heard a number
folks in the group have gotten Half-life running via wine (not exactly easy
I hear). Neverwinter Nights has a native Linux installer, which is a little
tricky, but works beautifully (except no -proprietary- bink video sequences,
though I hear they're working on it). As a side-note, all ID games (eg.
Quake III and RTCW) have native Linux installers (via point releases),
Unreal Tournament and Tournament 2003 also have native Linux, and it looks
like a Linux port of Homeworld (yea!)in the works. If games are central to
your enjoyment, WineX may be worth considering. They have a sizable
supported games list, but it'll cost you a little bit.

Congrats on taking the Linux Challenge. I remember when I made the switch,
it took me a couple of weeks to a month to get things fully sorted out and
there's been no turning back since. Enjoy!

Marcel
