I've been using snort as an IDS on my systems for a long time now. Along with the SecurityFocus Extractor which collates, calculates and analyzes the raw network data (it sends daily reports to my inbox and compares the data with the rest of its users to paint a somewhat more global picture than simply what is traversing on your network), I think you end up with good, minimal intrusion detection for your system.
