I have recently helped a contact (some) who was looking into using Metadot. He tried to get it running on a Gentoo system, using a manual installation, and later trying to emerge the package. He wasn't able to get it running, though this might be more of a lack of familiarity with Gentoo... My input was more along the lines of helping him get the necessary prerequisites installed on Gentoo.
He decided to give Drupal a try, and is in the process of getting that set up and running. If you do a comparison of Metadot and Drupal at http://www.cmsmatrix.org/ it looks as though Drupal is the better package (IMO). Hope this helps.
