The most common problem I've seen is forgetting to enable the swap.  It's one

If you mean VMware, then you need to remember the NIC and HDDs are not what 
you expect that they are.  I don't remember the right ones, but come back to 
the list if you need them, I have it written down somewhere.


Separate from your questions, I'd suggest trying a stage 3 first.  It'll be 
MUCH faster, it's all of 2 commands less in terms of learning, and the end 
result is close enough.

Also, if your kernel is screwed up, you can simply reboot from the install CD, 
mount /boot, / , /proc, and swap,  chroot, and recompile your kernel again 
with any changes.

I've always preferred ext2 for /boot, and reiser for /.

Once you have it working, if you run KDE, read the Gentoo Prelinking howto.  
It's pretty easy, and you'll see MUCH better performance.
