If you are new to linux and are running Debian based distro (ubuntu/kubuntu are
debian based), it is usually best to _NOT_ get the latest tar.gz. There is a
large chance that this will break things.

Do a search through synaptic/apt-get or whatever you use to install new programs
and to update the system. If what you are looking for is not found or not
updated, then the short answer is that you are out of luck.

For the long answer, check these links:
http://www.us.debian.org/doc/devel-manuals#maint-guide
http://www.us.debian.org/doc/devel-manuals#devref
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/reference.en.html
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

For a slightly less long answer, a good start is this article:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Debian-Binary-Package-Building-HOWTO/

Generally speaking, you should not need to know this, unless you don't value
sleep...

Cheers

and as far as "messing around with themes" goes, i wasn't doiing

Actually I think the problem with evolution is the theme. The errors
listed above are caused by a broken gtk-qt-engine. Evolution uses the
gtk+ toolkit unlike the KDE applications which use the QT toolkit. So if
evolution is the only GTK app. that your using, it would explain why you
are only seeing the problem with that application. I think that your k3b
problem is completely unrelated. I would switch back to the default
theme, and see if evolution will start. If so, then you can see which
themes it has a problem with. You can also switch to a native gtk theme
by running gnome-theme-manager. Or you can try updating your copy of
gtk-qt-engine. The latest version is available at
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software_2fgtk_2dqt I hope this helps,
if you have any other questions just let me know.
