As discussed at the meeting Wednesday night, CLUG will now host a King of The Hill contest on a "hostile" network at every meeting. The goal is to remotely take over a target computer and make it obvious you have done so - perhaps by changing the background image of the desktop.

Some details have been posted to the website: http://clug.ca/node/600.
However, this page is the first draft and is subject to change.

On Wednesday, the target computer was a Windows XP SP2 box, un-patched. While Andrew was able to open a shell on the screen of the target computer, it promptly crashed preventing further access. So the August competition was undecided.

A word about the hostile network. This is all intended to foster a friendly competitive environment. But, this is also representative of the real world wireless networks we all connect to. If you choose to connect to this network, you are declaring that you understand that any data on your computer can be compromised and possibly removed or damaged. So it is suggested that you do not use your business laptops on the hostile network.

However, if you have no other laptops to play with, you can make use of a live CD, external drive, etc. The ONE rule we have at this time is that if a computer is "pwned" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pwn), that any unmounted drives/partitions be left alone. Well, I guess the second unspoken rule is to NOT format or wipe the drives that ARE mounted.. :)

Those who choose to participate are requested to set up at the back of the room and not disrupt the presentation or regular meeting. But once the Q&A time arrives, you are encouraged to share your experiences with other participants. We'd like that EVERYONE's skills improve by participating.

Questions can be posted to the regular mailing list here, or addressed to Andrew, Dafydd, or myself. (The three of us are the default organizers for now.)

I'd personally suggest getting more familiar with NMAP if you'd like to participate. As a starting point at least...

Let the games begin!

Shawn
