FYI - I got the adapter and the HD is readable...thank God.
I made a copy and will work checking the HD for damaged files.

btw, if the drive was damaged, you *may* be able to recover data using 
"dd" or "ddrescue".  It depends on the nature/severity of the damage. 
And there is always drive recovery companies like CBL for the heavy 
lifting stuff, but be prepared for a very large bill for that type of work.
