Sure, arguments could be made either way, but depending on the use-case.
Of course what I propose would be horrible in some situations.

The primary use-case for text fading to transparent in lieu of the
ellipsis (for us) is an EPG (Electronic Program Guide).  In this case,
when the goal is to present as much usable information as possible in a
given screen, and when program titles regularly exceed the grid cell
size available, being able to make out the last 3 letters of the title
(even if they are being faded to transparent) as opposed to having those
last letters replaced with an ellipsis is sometimes the difference
between recognizing the program title and not.
