Well, I imagine we could have a shim that will automatically create sub-build directories when you specify a CONFIGURATION=... argument or just starts the build in there. And if a build folder is missing but the configuration is declared, it would run CMake with similar startup arguments. In practice, it would be the same generator, with some extra logic in the main Makefile.
