On Windows, where you have DESTDIR=C:/MyDir and an "absolute" install path of "C:/Program Files/Whatever"....
"C:/MyDir/C:/Program Files/Whatever" is probably going to make somebody a bit grumpy... Big picture perspective needed. Do not hastily change default behaviors.
