It seems to only group variables if more than one variable has the prefix.
When I added a second variable with the BWA_* prefix, they showed up as
expected. To me, this violates the "principle of least surprise". Is this
behavior present as designed or is it simply a bug?

This is definitely working for me. I mean if I have 2 or more entries
that start with the same thing up to the first underscore it gets
grouped.
