David, Yes, adding "call" to the front of the command works. Thanks! Would be great to get that fixed for 2.8.7, as I spent a good portion of yesterday racking my brain about this.
I also discovered that, if using a variable to build the CONFIGURE_COMMAND, that variable should be a list, rather than a space-separated string. Would be nice to document that, too.
