In the "Guidelines for Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Consolidated Billing" letter from CMS--found on the AANAC website, page 2 states under letter B. The follwing are exluded from SNF consilidated billing ante the institutional or technical component must be billed separately to the Medicare FI: . The following services furnished on an outpatenent basis by a hospital or critical access hospital: -Cardiac catheterization services -Computerized axial tomography scans; -Magnetic resonance imaging -Ambualtory surgery involving the use of an operating room; -Radiation therapy; -Emergency services; -Angiography; -Lymphatic and venous procedures; -Ambulance services furnished in connection with any of the above outpatient hospital services.
So, since it says that Ambulance services furnished in connection with Emergency services is an exclusion, I would think that the return trip from the ER is "in connection" with the Emergency services.
