Here the MDS coordinator does Med A utilization review and makes all decisions r/t Med A coverage.  Even the SW’s who do preadmission screening consult prn especially if the cost of accepting the resident is high.   Also, our CEO negotiates payment with some insurance companies and uses the “RUGS category” as the defining information and he gets that info from the MDS Coordinator.

Thanks!  I've found a vast difference among facilities as to the specifics of MDS Coordinator responsibility (hence my question to the group)! 
On a related note, in your facility whom makes the final decision as to whether the resident meets Medicare A/skilled criteria eligibility...usually has been the DON or NHA in my past facilities.
