Yes because the weakness is a result/outcome of the acute illness. Our
rehab department assigns the appropriate code to cover the resident's
deficit and it is on the MDS etc along with the acute medical diagnosis.
We document previous level and potential for improvement.

Subject: Restorative therapy for medical diagnosis

Are you covering patients on Medicare if their reason for
hospitalization was medical (pneumonia) and they come to the
facility for therapy because they are too weak to go home?
If so, what diagnosis are you using as your Medicare
diagnosis?
Thank you.
