Yes the cytogenetic tests and the FISH tests are different. With the cytogenetic analysis, they look at 20 cells through a microscope and look for the translocated chromosome (the philadelphia chromosome). There is no error with this test because it is manually done and it is considered the "gold standard" for making clinical decisions. The FISH test looks at 200-500 cells and looks for the bcr/abl transcript which is basically what causes the philadelphia chromosome. The FISH is not fool proof and does have a false positive rate so few doctors will base any clinical decisions on it. In fact, some doctors won't even bother doing it anymore....mine included. There are also studies that show the results will vary dramatically depending on which type of cells are scored (neutrophils as opposed to lymphocytes) so again, because the results are not fool proof and I guess not representative of what's really going on, I would focuss on what is the gold standard and that's your big fat zero on your cytogenetic test :) Congratulations, you're a zero!
