Dear Group,
I am glad that my post with information about the cml status of Marque
and Sandra prior to their recent deaths was helpful to a number of
people and calmed your fears. It is important, as someone else wrote,
to remember that we are not all in the same medical situation, even
through we all have CML.

As a reminder....there are usually 3 phases of CML. Without treatment,
the chronic phase usually lasts about 3-5 years and the cells function
for the most part normally.

Then there is progression to the accelerated phase (again, without
treatment) and this usually lasts from 1-2 years. In this phase there
are other changes (higher basophils and other clonal evolution or
changes) and the disease is becoming harder to control.

The final phase is blast crisis, where most of the cells are immature
blast cells and they do not function normally. This phase is often
terminal within about 6 months.

The GOOD NEWS is that most of the people on this list are in chronic
phase and their disease is well controlled by medication. The goal is
to remain in chronic phase CML........people don't die from CML in
chronic phase.

The hope for those that are moving into accelerated phase, or even
blast crisis, is that treatment will return them to the chronic phase.
Sometimes the treatment of choice at this point will be a BMT.

I hope this information is also helpful for some people. As a Gleevec
turtle, I always remind myself that "chronic is good!"

May we all remain chronic until a cure is found.
Nancy C.
