Hi

I am 25 and live in Scotland, I was diagnosed with CML in March 04,
I was at diagnosis I had a 54.5% Ph+ after 8 months on Glivec 400mg
I now am 0.016% Ph+ so responding well.

Initially I did not really want to become involved in the CML
Community, however the last few months I have been tracking
discussions and found I want to know more about this condition. At
diagnosis I was given a booklet five or six years out of date which
painted a very bleak picture, this has changed so much in a few
short years, if this rate of development continues I for one am very
hopeful that a complete cure is just a few years away, I now find
myself worrying about long term side affects of relatively untested
drugs instead of the thought of not reaching my 30th birthday.

I may have the opportunity to participate in a Phase 1 Clinical
Trial which will involve 45 people. The trial is for people
responding well to Glivec. There will be three parts to this trial
and I wouldn't be able to choose which arm I would be on.

15 people will take Glivec as normal
15 people will take a pulsed dose of Glivec 3 weeks on one
week off
15 people will take a pulsed dose of Glivec 3 weeks on one
week off, injecting growth factor in the week off of Glivec.

Pulsing Glivec
Whilst off Glivec sleeping Leukaemia cells have time to wake up,
divide once active Glivec should be able to shut them down.

Growth Factor
The growth factor will be applied in the week off Glivec this should
force any sleeping cells to wake up, divide, again once the cell has
become active Glivec should be able to shut it down.

The theory
Allowing or forcing the leukaemia to grow then in turn makes it an
easy target for Glivec to shut down, this is hoped to turn low PCR
results to negative PCR results.

I will not be eligible for this trial until I have been stable for
six months that will be at 11 months on Glivec. So I may be too late
to participate in this trial.

This is a Phase 1 trial so just about completely untested though I
feel very positive about it, I was wondering if anyone had
experience of using growth factor (I think it's called GCFS) in
combination with Glivec possibly for Stem Cell Collection, or
pulsing of doses of Glivec?

Thanks David
