Mobile Automated Blood Donation Technology to Make Public Debut at PNC Park

PITTSBURGH, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- A new way to donate blood will be
publicly unveiled at PNC Park tomorrow during a blood drive sponsored by the
Pittsburgh Pirates and Central Blood Bank. In addition to the traditional
method of "whole" blood donation, program participants will have the
opportunity to try new automated blood donation technology.
The new technology utilizes equipment that separates whole blood into its
basic components during the donation process and returns plasma, platelets,
and a replenishing saline solution to the donor. The result is that the
donor can give two pints of red blood cells, retains their own plasma and
platelets, and is automatically rehydrated.
The process utilizes a single needle that is actually smaller than the one
used during a traditional blood donation. Central Blood Bank recently
commissioned ten new automated units that will be operated at blood drives
throughout the tri-state area. The equipment has been in use since mid-May
at selected locations and is now making its public debut. Event information
