Hi Pat:
According to all of the literature handed out to me from Cleveland
Clinic, aspirin is the only over-the-counter pain reliever I CAN take.
No ibuprofen and no Tylenol. So, I do take enteric-coated aspirin on
occasion with food as aspirin has always been wicked on my stomach. I
was also told by CCF that I cannot take any SSRIs - Prozac, Zoloft,
Celexa, etc., the only antidepressant I can take is Wellbutrin (with
Gleevec) and I noticed others take SSRIs that are on Gleevec. Looks
like it depends on where you live and who is your doctor. According to
my literature I also cannot eat broccoli, brussel sprouts, charbroiled
meats, grapefruit, starfruit and Seville oranges. I have at least 5
pages of over-the-counter and prescription meds that I cannot take -
including some antibiotics. So, maybe it is due to the specific
clinical trial I am in or it is due to interactions with the Gleevec -
I'm not sure. I take the aspirin with no untoward effects while on the
Gleevec. I never take any of my other medications in conjunction with
the Gleevec - I always space everything out and I take the Gleevec at
night as it tends to knock my socks off and I sleep through the worst
of it. I know you have other health issues and maybe they don't want
you to take the aspirin due to that rather than the Gleevec, I simply
don't know. I do know a friend of mine substituted aspirin for
Coumadin when she couldn't afford her Coumadin (blood thinner) - not
exactly the wisest thing to do, but it was better than nothing.

Take care!
Kelly
