Just before starting an offshore race (Transpac, Vic Maui, etc.) on a boat with 
a folding prop someone was volunteered to dive over and place rubber bands on 
the prop to prevent it from dragging a blade.  The rubber bands were light 
enough to break in case we needed to motor back to a MOB or to assist another 
boat.

Often the "volunteer" was the youngest crew onboard.

This sounds like a pain, especially singlehanded.
If the shaft does not get oriented properly, do the blades produce a
horrible drag, or just a "not quite minimal" drag?
