I have a 2GM20F in my 1977 C&C 26.
It was in there when I bought it.
I have the original build sheets and inspection papers for my boat. The Vire 
was standard at the time, but the diesel was fitted as an option. I don't know 
if the 2GM20 was the original option (the paperwork is not clear on that) and 
the Yanmar was shiny new when I bought the boat - one of the reasons I plumped 
for this particular boat.
There is plenty of room under the companionway, so I would think you could get 
almost any make of engine in there!
