I have a Garmin plotter and a Nexus readout mounted to a plate at the top of
the binnacle, essentially on top of the compass - maybe 6" away. The compass
and the plotter read the same, depending on how fast the plotter catches up.

I guess I didn't read the instructions.

I have found 2 small electronic items that had a powerful influence on the
compass - a hand held radio and a cell phone. The effect was particularly bad
when clipped on to a binoculars holder mounted in front of the binnacle. That
binoculars holder has held all kinds of things that affected the compass and I
am more careful with what I put in there now. Screwdrivers, rigging knives,
spare or spent AA cells, pliers, - all had measurable effect and are now
banned. Aluminum beer cans don't seem to be a problem and they fit nicely.

I agree with all the comments about not worrying too much about your chart
plotter, so long as you take a thoughtful approach to the power leads and test
your set up.

Thanks all for your ideas on this one; your input will help me find a
work-around. I guess the manufacturers' guidance is there for a reason, even
if the reason is CYA! - Chris
