I race Knot Again mostly in non spin class. Prior to the start of the race, The spin foeguys are attached and set so that the pole when pulled back it will not touch the shrouds. The topping lift is attached and led back to a hook at the mast. When we are approaching the windward mark, my foredeck person unhooks the topping lift and sets the lazy sheet in the spin pole jaws. When we are about 100' from the mark, I have the pole lifted using the topping lift (no one needs to then be on the bow). As we round, the jib is tacked and brought back into the jaw of the pole so that the pole is then about 90 degrees to the downwind direction and we jibe the main to go downwind wing and wing. By moving the pole forward I can sail at a better wind angle and increase speed from dead downwind. This method is very efficient and we have the sails set within 1 -2 boat lengths of rounding. depending on how true the course stays, we can either jibe or hold the downwind course until we jibe only the main and then reach to the mark. Try this. It is fast, efficient and, with a little crew practice, fast.
