Fred,

I am a native Midwesterner, a Lake Michigan and Huron sailor and racer in my
youth out of Chicago and Detroit (C&C 29, Peterson 34, Tartan 10, Erickson 37
with several Chicago-Mackinaws under my keel). Since 1999 I have lived in
Connecticut, so I think I can safely recommend some points of interest.

On your way to Mystic, stop in New Haven for two things, Pepe's pizza on
Wooster St. (said to be the place this delicacy started in America, and still
baked in its original coal fired oven) and the newly renovated and expanded
Yale University Art Gallery on Chapel St. It is free and one of the best in
the world. It will bowl you over.

One of the best CT shoreline seafood restaurants, very casual, is Lenny and
Joes. The New Haven restaurant is on the water with a great view and
outstanding New England seafood very reasonably priced and a good bar too.
However, if you do go the Yale Art Gallery there is a great, French owned,
French classic Bistro just one block south of the museum on Chapel St. called
the Union League. This is a real treat, and will certainly impress your wife
and daughters, but it is at least a business casual place and at lunch expect
each meal with a glass of wine and a tip to run around $30.

New Haven is a gem, with the gothic splendor (modeled after Oxford) of Yale in
its center. I recently had a visit from some friends from England who are
conversant with Oxford and Cambridge and they were duly impressed. By the way
Chapel St. and Yale Campus was the set for a good part of the last Indiana
Jones movie.

I also highly recommend the town of Stonington, a few miles East of Mystic for
a very well preserved Colonial and Victorian New England seaport village and
likewise a very good seafood restaurant on a wharf, Skippers Dock.

I am a fellow at Yale so if you care to stop I would be happy to give you and
your family a quick, Cliff's Note, tour of inside the University.

I've got a wedding to attend this Saturday in Middletown, CT with my wife and
daughters. We're staying through until Tuesday, and I've been looking into
some fun stuff to do/see on Sunday and Monday. I've already got the Mystic
Seaport on the list (maybe Monday, as Sunday will probably be busier?); and one
other possibility would be to take the fast ferry from New London to Block
Island for the day.

Any listers in the area have other ideas for activities or restaurants
(seafood!!!) in the immediate area for us? We probably won't have the time to
go out on someone's boat (as much as I'd like to), and wouldn't want to be the
victim of weather in that case.

Mystic Pizza? Maybe Julia Roberts still works there .....

We ordered pizza and donairs from Mystic Pizza the day we arrived there after
our all night drive to pick up Nut Case. Unfortunately it was delivered by
some guy and not julie Roberts ...

As long as you are in Mystic, the Mystic Aquarium is also a great stop.
I believe they have a deal on a combined admission to both that is good for two
days. The restaurants we like most in Mystic are Alfred Packer Inn, The
Seahorse, and for a truly great breakfast, Kitchen Little, which is located in
a marina, and is on the second floor with panoramic views of the River. They
even have an outdoor balcony with seating under an awning. The restaurant on
the grounds of Mystic Seaport Museum, which was formerly awful, changed
operators about a year or two ago. We haven't tried it yet, but the people who
took it over had another place that was top shelf.

Fred,

Dock n Dine in Old Saybrook has great seafood with a great water view
of the CT River. So does The Boathouse in Mystic, but that's land-locked. In
Clinton, AQUA is at the Cedar Point Marina and has some great seafood
overlooking the water.

There are also two major outlet malls less than 1 half-hour drive
(Tanger and Clinton Corner).

There are also two major casinos nearby with great restaurants and
shows (Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods)

Yes -- see the seaport (the location of the 2012 C&C rendezvous) and
the aquarium. There is all some great shopping/walking at the Olde Mystic
Village.

Not far from Mystic (ten minutes) is the US Submarine Base, which
includes a tour of the USS Nautilus. There are plenty of other museums in the
area too. Lots to see. You may want to break up the wedding couple just so you
have the time to see it all.

        All the best,

It's my niece who is getting married; what they do after the wedding is their
own business! :^) This is just me, my wife and our two college-aged
daughters.

We did the aquarium with the girls several years ago, when we spent a week or
so staying at Point Judith, RI; so I think we'll skip that. The Sub Museum
looks interesting; but the outlet centers might catch the girls' eyes more
effectively...

When we took Calypso around in 2011 there was no cell coverage North of Hot
Springs Cove (near Tofino) on the West coast and North of Port Hardy on the
East coast. We did not go closer than a few miles to Winter Harbor so there
might be some coverage there, and maybe some of the small fishing resorts will
have wi-fi.

Calypso's co-owner and some of the crew that were new to sailing in remote
areas or offshore went into cell phone/internet withdrawal. I really enjoyed
the isolation from most modern day distractions (save GPS). When sailing into
Nootka Sound without another boat in sight I could almost hear an echo of Capt.
Cook as he moored the HMS Resolution in Ship Cove (now known as Resolution
Cove). If you have the time, anchor in Bligh Cove (a ways back into the
sound). The entrance is a little tight, but if you are the only boat in there
it will seem as if it is 1779 again.

We're heading out at the beginning of July, going around counterclockwise about
1 1/2 times if everything works out.
Anyone wanting to follow our adventures can check out our
blog...paradigmchafe.blogspot.ca<http://paradigmchafe.blogspot.ca>
I'm going to try and keep it as current as possible, but there's probably going
to be some times when I just can't get to an internet connection. I'm not sure
we can survive without the internet.
Anyone else going around or going to be in those parts when we're passing
through? Please throw us bacon.

Some "cultural" things to do / see

20 miles and 20 minutes from Middletown in Farmington CT there is the most
amazing museum called the Hillstead Museum

Here is some info from Google

Hill-Stead Museum, also known as Hill-Stead, is a Colonial Revival house and
art museum in Farmington, Connecticut, USA. It is best known for its French
Impressionist masterpieces, architecture, and stately grounds.

30 minutes in the opposite direction is New Haven. The Yale College tour is
quite interesting -especially the visit to the library. Yale also has some
great art collections.

The schooner Amistad has its base in New Haven - but I am not sure whether it
is there or not right now - last time I saw her, she was in Mystic Seaport for
repair
