I replaced the overhead panels on my 29-2 last year. Originals were 1/8
plywood covered with vinyl that had discoloured and peeled up along the
edges. Replaced them with new 1/8 plywood covered with thin "iron on"
laminate. The product is called "Preglued Melamine - Architectural Grade
Veneer" made by Bennett and available at Home Depot (you can find it with
the 3/4 inch wide rolls used to cover the edges of shelves). It comes in a
roll 12 inches wide x 99" and is available in a variety of wood grain
finishes as well as white and almond. I used the white for my boat. It is
really simple to use. You just cut out new plywood and iron on the melamine
with an old household clothes iron. Once the glue sets you trim the edges.
The new panels look great after a year.

Bent one side of the spanner. It slips out unless there is a lot of
pressure (a foot) on it. There was nothing unusual looking, so I did not
take a photo.

Sam - You're lucky to have a foresail trimmer, my foresail trimmer is the
same guy that is doing the main sail trim, and the helming, and operating
the engine, and hoisting the sails, and getting the boat to and from the
dock, i.e. me. I don't have an autohelm, nor even a wheel brake, so
something easy to operate is my primary need as I almost exclusively
single-hand (quite literally).
Rick - it sounds like you've sailed some nicely over-winched boats, my 24'
had Barient 12s if I recall correctly, and they were fine on a boat that
size.
Steve - they must have put bigger winches on later boats, I checked today
and they are definitely 16s on there.

I might pull the trigger on a pair of shiny stainless Andersons if they
physically fit, I have to get the measurements. It's only money *sigh*.
Cheers,
Paul.

On my C&C 35, I have one fresh water tank under the port settee. It
holds 28 gallons. The boat specs say she carries 40 gallons. I wonder
if there was another tank under the dinette. Has anyone installed
extra water tanks, and if so, what was the source? We want to take her

I replaced all of my overhead panels with FRP. It?s used for shower stalls
and comes in 4? X 8? sheets. It is extremely white so much so I had to
paint all of the head liner with Interlux Brightside blu-glow white.

Listers,

I've purchased a bunch of lights (LED under-kitchen-cabinet ones) to be
mounted in those overhead panels much like Ken Heaton has on his boat. But,
I'd prefer to go with something white instead of the teak-like ones that Ken
has. Does anyone have a good suggestion on what kind of material would be
best? I want something lightweight so it can stay up with velcro, but not
too flimsy so I can mount these lights in them.

1/4" star board? Any other suggestions?

Also, I know Ken already sent around a photo of the aft cabin during our
whose-boat-design-is-better chest-thumping email chain, but I had to include
a photo of mine too, with, of course, a custom blanket :-)

Hey everyone.
My Yanmar 1GM10 is slowly getting more and more difficult to start. With
full battery charge, good ground and contact, I'm finding the only way to
get the starter to spin is to give quick taps to the start button. If I hold
it, it just saps the power system and everything shuts down briefly. Is this
a sign of the starter becoming weak?

It s more than likely the switch itself, they have a bad habit of becoming
flaky
Check the ,connections on the switch .try shorting ( bypass the switch)the
wires at the switch and see if the starter works better

Yes, probably the starter. It could be a couple of repairable things
though. I think the most likely is the brushes and commutator. Brushes
are pretty easy to replace and the commutator can be polished up. The
circuit between the brushes and commutator needs to be solid for the
solenoid to have enough current to pull the fork that throws the drive gear
into the flywheel. If you want to save a buck or are in dire need you can
disassemble and repair the starter but for the time and effort required it
is probably better to have it rebuilt or replaced.

The wife and I were in a foreign Spanish port when the starter on the boat
we were chartering failed. We managed to disassemble the whole starter and
cleaned out all the carbon dust and dirt. We cleaned the commutator with
the only thing we had, balsamic vinegar. The brushes were worn and needed
replaced but the cleaning managed to get us started.

You might also check the quality of the connections and wires powering your
starter.

It's not a fix, but I used to start my 1GM with a hand crank back in
the days when I inadvertently left my battery switch in the "Both"
position.

Harder to do that now with my Perkins 4-236

My 27 Mk III has Barient 18 primary and Barient 10 halyard winches. I too
have been pondering replacements.

Whatever you decide to buy, self tailers are the next best investment after
new sails!

Cheers,
Paul.

Not quite the same size, but my 26 has had Lewmar 16ST's on the combing

need a 2 speed unless you're not very good at tacking. SamC&C 26 Liquorice

  Hi Listers,
I'm seriously considering replacing the current (I assume factory
standard) Barient single-speed winches. I'm not at the boat at the
moment, I think they are 16s. Anyway, I am looking at the Anderson 28ST
(two speed, self tailers). Is the 28 too big, too small, what do you
  have on your 27?
  Cheers,
  Paul.
