My experience has not been anything like the YouTube video.  It may have 
something to do with the actual solar panel configuration.  Mt cells (Solbian) 
are much larger than those shown in the YouTube video--I don't get a falloff 
anywhere near that amount.  Also, if you're thinking they might not work well 
because of the shadow from the boom, I haven't noticed that problem either but 
if it were a problem, you could always move the boom to prevent the shadow.

I think there is a big difference between different brands of solar panels and 
this is why you see these differences.
