I like the ring / shortened key idea. The pull switch is also a good idea, I did try the superglue trick and it did not work for me.
Truth is: I knew the key is in a vulnerable spot and I usually take it out while sailing as I often came close to kicking it myself, especially when the boat is healing hard.
Now I also know that just about any small key will work.. The key I was using since the beginning was my padlock key. I was quite impressed thinking that a smart prior owner had the padlock custom keyed to the start key or vice versa. After finally finding the original Yanmar key I saw that it wasn't.. It was just close enough to work.
As for a permanent solution I might just do like one of my dock neighbors and put a small Lexan cover over the control panel. A smoked cover would look nice and would be easy / cheap to make and install.
One more project way, way down the priority list. Meanwhile I'll just have a couple spares made and be more diligent about removing the key while sailing..
