After removing the bolts holding the cap, check to make sure there aren't set screws inside the threaded holes. The cap should unscrew easily. My shaft has a threaded hole in which I can screw in an eye bolt. It allows me to attach a line to the shaft for support, while adjusting the cap.
Alan Bergen 35 Mk III Thirsty Rose City YC Portland, OR So, I got a little further towards removing the hull today but no joy at the end of the day. We were held up trying to removed the bolts holding the quadrant on due to standard stainless bolts in aluminum thread issues. Once we got that sorted out near the end of the day we found that we couldn’t drop the rudder shaft. We loosened the two set screws (bolts really…) and tried to unscrew the stainless steel cap at the top of the shaft in the cockpit sole with the thought that this is what holds the assembly in place. We didn’t have much luck with that initially and started in on the “don’t force it, get a bigger rock!” theory of mechanics. We have unscrewed it a bit but I’d like to make sure that I am moving in the right direction. And not totally f’ing things up as is my wont. So my question to list is: Am I correct in thinking that the cap is screwed on? Has anyone done this on a circa early 80’s C&C rudder shaft?
