We tried using the topping lift and found it was un-necessary using the aforementioned technique and it was just one more line to get tangled-up ( It did :-) ) .
Also, we make sure that the cleat on the pole is pointing down / jaws pointing up. This way it's easier to release the clew end / the sheets don't get hung-up in the cleat when tacking while the pole is mounted on the mast. Regards, -Francois Rivard 1990 34+ "Take Five" Lake Lanier, GA
