I also have a 35 Mk II with below deck autopilot. It was a major challenge but 
the only good way to go due to the layout of the binnacle and engine 
controls... My main problem with this unit is that I lost about 20% of total 
steering control from lock to lock, due to the length of the steering arm on 
the pilot. Did you have the same issue?
