Two years ago I had the aluminum fuel tank replaced with a fiberglass tank. I
started noticing the smell of diesel the year before, the Admiral noticed it
more than me. The bilge area under the engine started showing signs of diesel
and it got worst over time. The aluminum tank was pulled by the marina mechanic
and it was decided it was beyond repair. It was like the tank had cancer on the
bottom, a lot of little pin holes - especially in the areas of the tank that
sat on the wooden frame that was holding the tank in place. The odor of diesel
is the most difficult smell to eliminate, I run an ionizer 24/7 when the boat
is in the slip.
