Hi Greg,

I have the stock Barient 28s on Sweet. A little known design feature of these winches... if you take about 5 wraps on and let the turns ride up a bit the top turn will come against the upper flange and pinch tight enough to hold it. Being right handed, I can then easily strip off the tail with the left hand because I don't have to hang onto it. I rarely cleat off, letting top friction take care of things and I do a fair amount of single-handed sailing.

When I get too old, I will buy a battery operated right-angle socket wrench (Milwaukee or equivalent) to do the grunt stuff. That could be as early as next year, if I become a pensioner at 60. :)

        Cheers, Russ

I love the looks of my beautiful Stainless Barient 28's on my C&C 35MkII, but am facing the reality that as I age, self tailing winches are becoming more of a necessity rather than a luxury... What have other owners found as the best replacement? I want to stay with stainless and fitting the existing hole pattern would be a plus... Equal or slightly increased power ratio would also be important. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
