I  did the same thing with a Newport 28 that I owned. Except I use wood
battens to span the gap between the settees, , the thin plywood fit under
the settee cushions, and a king size air mattress turned athwart ship for
sleeping.

I though you guys might enjoy this bit of creative bunk solution!

Our prior boat was a 72 35 MK 1.  We had a great deal of trouble sleeping in
the V berth but didn't want to sleep in separate bunks.  So, we created a
way to turn the main salon into one king sized bunk. 

Just a few 1/3" stainless bars, some holes, a fee sheets of 1/4" plywood and
some custom cushion inserts that stowed in the V berth perfectly when not in
use.  Set up and break down took about 5 minutes...
