Endura Braid is what is referred to in the industry as a “core dependent” line.
As such, the cover is just protection for the core and serves little in the
overall strength of the rope. But understand that if the cover yarns were
“split” (I don’t know what that means other than they were cut and opened up),
it isn’t unthinkable that the core may also have been damaged, in which case,
simply putting on a polyester sheathing “band-aid” may not have the desired
result. If you do add new cover, make sure that the new cover extends far
beyond the herniated core so you aren’t stitching into an area that may already
be partially compromised. Also run your hand over the damaged area to make
sure there are no lumps or flat spots caused by overheating of the core yarns..

Finally, be aware that Dyneema, Spectra, Vectran and other high modulus fibers
don’t stand up over time compared to Polyester double braids. If this line is
5 years old or more, you may be better served with a replacement line. It is a
jib sheet which generally speaking won’t completely screw you up if it lets go,
but maybe it can find a lower stress application on the boat and get replaced
with something undamaged.

Subject: Stus-List Repair of polyester sove on jib sheet.

One of my jib sheets' cover split during my last racing adventure--of course a
little too far from either end to just cut or reverse the line. The line is
3/8" Endura braid with a dyneema core which is fine--and at 10,000 lbs breaking
strength should stay fine!

I have some experience in adding covers to smaller line to thicken it up for my
rope clutches and I have already 'snaked' the core thru the end so that the
covers meet.

My thought is to just put a bunch of thru stitches at right angles to each
other from one side of the broken cover to the other and "...drive on", saving
myself about a boat buck in the process.

Any thoughts on this from the list?
