Many years ago I got tired of the annual crack patching. Some years it
was worse than others. I tried several different fillers. Like drywall,
you HAVE to put something down to hold things together, or the crack
comes back.
I torqued the bolts carefully. I found an affordable 3/4 inch drive
torque wrench with an almost 4 foot handle at Harborfreight. Gathered
all the required extensions and deep sockets from Sears and NAPA. These
are tools used for large trucks and earthmoving equipment. You may have
to special order the sockets depending on your local NAPA. My town has
their regional warehouse with a storefront attached.
Then I dug out the old filler all the way around, mostly using a wire
brush wheel on a drill after I had gone around with a hammer and chisel.
I ground (wire brush wheel) down a swath all the way around starting
about 10 inches above and maybe a foot below the smile, leaving it very
rough for "tooth". Wrapped several layers of woven fiberglass and west
system epoxy around the whole thing spiraled at a slight angle like a
bandage in alternation directions. Sanded and faired the whole keel and
then re-applied Interprotect 2000 to seal everything before bottom
paint. I did this around 2004 and have not seen any signs of a smile
since. I'm thinking I could probably remove the bolts and it would make
no difference. That keel is NOT coming off.
Now when I smile at my C&C, it doesn't smile back. I'm okay with that!

Did this problem affect all C&C's? I have a 1976 Landfall 42 and so
far no sign of it ... Touch wood.
