I would say yes.

I have discovered that electrical products typically have too small of a
gauge wire doing into the units. Feel the cord of a shopVac after you have
run it for 20 minutes! - the delivery system is the problem . As long as
you can get the proper voltage and Amps to the item, a little overheating in
10 inches is usually not a problem - How much more does it cost to run say,
14 Ga vs. 16 Ga to the Panel? Not much. The longer the run with undersized
wire, the lower the volts get, which makes the Amperage rise, which raises
the heat - also in the motor.

Let me rephrase that question...i am using the same wire size the switch and
pump are using. Still bigger?

So what size wire would not cause a voltage drop...

I was referring to premature failure of pumps due to low voltage. Just a
guess on my part.

Touche' has a Rule 1500 gph bilge pump that has worked well for 15+ years.
I use a Rule 35 float switch which has had one failure in 20 years. I have
not seen the high failure rate for rule pumps that others have seen.

On my list is to replace the Rule float switch with a USS mini float switch
if it will fit. The bilge on a 35-1 is fairly shallow.

My opinion is the USS mini switch is very reliable.

Hi Dennis
Are you referring to a bilge pump or the bilge pump high water switch...
What's the model number of the system you've installed?
Thanks

Bob alludes to a critical but often overlooked issue. Wiring that is too
small to carry the amperage of a user, in this case, a bilge pump, can
result in excessive voltage drop. Low voltage could contribute to premature
failure.

I second the Ultra Safety Systems bilge pump. I don't have one on Touche'
(yet) but my buddy and I installed a bunch of them over the years. To my
knowledge, they are all still working.

I'll add a little bit to this discussion...up until this year I was
replacing RULE Super Switches every year-sometimes they didn't even last a
year. I never had a problem with my RULE 1500 bilge pump, just the float
switches. I recently changed over to a float switch made by ULTRA systems
and I love it. It hasn't been a year yet but it is manufactured so much
better than the RULE float switches that I'm sure it will last several years
at least.

I've also replaced my bilge pump wiring and went up one size from the
minimum needed to do the job. All connections are done with heat shrink
connectors too.

David, can you provide a few more details? What do you have currently and

Every friggin year more BS. So changing out primary to diaghram and

Any brand suggestions?
