1. Colregs question for boats not in an organized race If the boats were racing, there would be preparation in the skippers minds for such a situation and it would not cause undue anxiety. I do not think this can be settled by the COlregs, but, instead by the rules of common sense (which might not always be too common). It is just bad form to do something that is going to scare or cause distress in another boater. Good manners dictates that you do not pass so close to a non-racing boat that it causes the boat, especially if on starboard, to alter course. If they were too close to shout a hail that the intention was to pass astern and that no course alteration was needed, that_might_ have been OK, otherwise, not OK Howard Paul, SKipper Knot Again 35-3
