I had a challenge a few years ago when I bought the boat with excess water in the fuel tank and lines. I actually removed the fuel tank completely and took it to a shop that steam cleaned the fuel tank or whatever it is they do to clean a fuel tank. There was a fair amount of crap on the bottom of the tank that had accumulated over 20 years of use.
It certainly wasn't an expensive activity. The biggest challenge was getting the fuel tank out of the lazarette. That was about 5 years ago and nothing is showing in the racor. Adam Get Outlook for Android<https://aka.ms/ghei36>
